Thanksgiving Day . . . wait, what day am I on again?

Okay, friends. I'm giving up on the daily posts. I know, I know, it's sad, and I'm a quitter, and blah blah blah. But let's be completely honest here. I haven't written a post in thirteen days. I have a week's worth of drafts saved, but for the rest, I'd have to think back to the specific days and postdate the posts and all that jazz. So, I'm giving up. I'm too busy for this. I'll still hopefully blog on occasion, but I've got other things on my mind. And I'd rather spend my evenings with Andrew than worrying about my daily post.

But that doesn't mean I'm not thankful for everything I have. As any reader is well aware, I am so thankful for my incredibly wonderful fiancé. He is amazing and so patient with me when I'm ornery, which has been more frequent than usual lately. Not because of him, though—he is always so understanding. When I just need to cry for some unknown reason, he doesn't question it. He just offers his shoulder and lets me cry. And then he talks to me so I can pinpoint what's wrong. I love him so much.

I am also thankful for my awesome family, which I got to see quite a bit over Thanksgiving. Andrew and I spent a few days at my parents' house, and it was fun to see my nieces and nephews and spend time with my family. It was a relaxing few days, and it was a much-needed break.

In other news, Andrew and I have an apartment! It's a basement apartment, and it has a lot of space. The kitchen, master bedroom, and master bathroom are huge. There are two bedrooms, so we should have plenty of room for all our crap. The family that owns the house and lives upstairs seems really nice, and I think it will be a good situation for us. I'm so happy that we have a place to live! Our own little space. I can't wait to move in and start making it our home.

There are a mere 84 days until I get married to the love of my life. That's a little less than three months. As of yesterday, we have been together for six months. And it's been six of the best months of my life. Really. I'm so happy. And although 84 days still seems like a long time, I know it will go fast. We take engagement photos this Saturday (and I am so excited!). We have a bazillion Christmas parties to attend during the next few weeks. Then it's Christmas and New Year's, when we can move Andrew and hopefully a good portion of my stuff into our apartment. Then I'll be taking bridals, and we'll be getting our announcements out. Then I'll have to worry about getting everything ready so I can take my endowments out. And then it's our wedding day! So when I think about it in terms of what still needs to be done, 84 days isn't long at all.

I apologize again that I fell short with my month of thanksgiving. But it's all in my heart, I promise.

Thanksgiving Day Six

I feel the need to start this post with a disclaimer, which is that I am a terrible citizen. I am not voting today because I am not registered. Why am I not registered? The answer is simple: I forgot. That's truly it. I completely forgot until it was too late, and then I was up the creek without a paddle. I am fully aware of my own apparent apathy toward the election this year, so do me the kindness of not judging me too harshly. In my defense, I recently got engaged and have had plenty of other things on my mind.

Despite my own lack of obvious patriotism, I am immensely thankful to live in a country that has an open election that requires its citizens to get involved. I am thankful that I live in a country where I am free to form my own opinions and share them with others. Where I can do something as simple as write on this blog without worrying about whether what I say might get me in trouble. Where I am free to practice my religion and cultivate my beliefs. Where I can have a job and create opportunities for myself.

I know that I often forget about the amazing opportunities I have been given simply by virtue of where I was born. I often take for granted how blessed I am to live in a country whose government allows me to do what I want to do without fear of retribution. What we have here in the United States is truly amazing. So while I dropped the ball this election day, I am thankful for all those who didn't.

A Promise

I need to blog more. I know that. It's been over a month, and I know of at least one person who is missing my posts. (I'm really hoping it's more than one, but I'll take what I can get.)

Here's the dealio: every time I have time to write a blog post, I am suddenly not in the mood to finish any of the 15 or so drafts I currently have saved. I have plenty of material and absolutely no desire. Maybe this is because I have been very tired lately. Or maybe it's because I've spent way too much of my free time reading about the upcoming football season. Or maybe it's the new TV shows I've gotten myself addicted to (namely Mad Men and Friday Night Lights). These are the things that have also kept me from doing important things like reading my book and writing in my journal.

Whatever the reason, I haven't blogged, and this is me making a promise: In the next week, I will publish a real, legitimate blog post. I don't know which draft I will finish yet, but I will choose one and I will post it. If I don't, anyone who really does pay attention to me and my random blog can feel free to berate me for being a liar.

Defiantly ≠ Definitely

According to Merriam-Webster.com:

de·fi·ant: full of or showing defiance : bold, impudent <defiant rebels> < a defiant refusal>

def·i·nite: 1: having distinct or certain limits <definite standards for pupils to meet> 2a : free of all ambiguity, uncertainty, or obscurity <demanded a definite answer> b : unquestionable, decided <the quarterback was a definite hero today>

Therefore, "OMG, I am so defiantly there!" has a much different meaning than "OMG, I am so definitely there!" Mmmkay?

Customer service is a pain in my behind.

So remember how I posted a couple of months ago about how I bought a totally awesome refurbished Samsung Blu-ray player? Turns out that the totally awesome Blu-ray player is so awesome that it won't even play Blu-ray discs. Sound like a problem to you? Yeah, me too. I played one disc all the way through clear back when I first bought the player, but I have tried four discs since (I don't have a lot of Blu-rays, so don't judge the low number) and none of them has worked. DVDs work fine, but not the Blu-rays.

I looked up the product online and found out that I have a 90-day warranty. Sweet. So I called Best Buy, who told me to take the player into the store, where they could look at it for me. So the next day I went to the store on my lunch break so they could look at my player, and I was told that because it was a refurbished model, they couldn't send it into Samsung for me. I needed to call the number I called in the first place so they could help me. Fantastic.

I went back out to my car and decided to try calling support again while I had some time. They tried transferring me, but I was told that their systems were down so they couldn't help me. Now that is what I call good service. I was really frustrated, so I made myself feel better by buying lunch at Zupa's. Because Zupa's never disappoints.

After work, I called Best Buy's support again, and the call was disconnected. It was getting ridiculous when I finally got ahold of someone who had a working system and could look up all of my information. It turns out that the Best Buy warrantee on my player had run out. I still had a warrantee through Samsung, but I had to call Samsung and get help from their customer service. That would have been nice to know the first time I called.

So I called Samsung's support and spent a good 35 minutes on the phone with a lady with an accent from who knows where. She kept trying to convince me that my player wouldn't play the Blu-ray discs because my firmware wasn't updated, even though that was the very first thing I tried. Then she tried telling me that I just needed to wait for the next upgrade that they were working on right then and that would come out in the next few weeks. There was no way I was waiting for a few weeks hoping the upgrade worked while my warrantee expired. No way. The lady finally agreed that something was wrong with the player when I told her that one of the discs that wouldn't play (How to Train Your Dragon—way cute movie, by the way) played perfectly fine on three—yes, three—other Blu-ray players, one of which was the same exact model as mine.

After this ridiculous process, I was hoping there would be very little I was required to do to get the thing fixed. I spent a lot of money on it—I deserve to have a working player. Unfortunately, my saga wasn't over yet. I was told that I had to fax in my receipt to prove that I bought the product. The fact that they had record of it didn't matter. So I had to wait two days until I was back at work so I could fax the dumb receipt. Then I had to wait for a phone call with the rest of the information I needed. Luckily, I got the call the same day I faxed the receipt. The lady on the phone told me the address and that I needed to ship the Blu-ray player to Samsung on my own dime. Awesome. But I guess it's better than paying for a new player.

Finally, a week and a half of phone calls and $20 later, my Blu-ray player is in the mail. It should get to the repair place in California on Thursday. Then they will have to look at it, fix it, and ship it back to me. In about two weeks (at the longest), I should have a fully functional Blu-ray player back where it belongs, hooked up to my TV so I can watch awesome-looking movies. Because even watching DVDs on a regular DVD player isn't the same as watching DVDs on a Blu-ray player. I need my Blu-ray player back. Seriously.

Waking Up Fail

Fail #1: I set my alarm at 6:00 a.m. this morning so I could go to the gym before work. As soon as my alarm went off, I promptly turned it off and set it for an hour later. So much for working out. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get myself to go to the gym in the morning ever again. Ugh.

Fail #2: My first thought when I woke up (again) was, "Wow, it's bright outside." I glanced at the clock, and it was 8:52 a.m. I'm supposed to be at work at 9:00. Awesome. I jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes, yanked my hair into a ponytail, applied some mascara, brushed my teeth, and was out the door. I made it to work by 9:20, which is a major accomplishment, I think. Too bad I've felt like a schlump all day.

Two major failures without even leaving my bed. Way to start the day, Lindy.

What I Should Be Doing

  • Going to the gym.
  • Reading a book.
  • Writing in my journal.
  • Writing something creative and awesome.
  • Cleaning my bathroom.
  • Doing something social.
But instead, I'm dinking around on my computer. This is what happens when Lindy has absolutely no motivation.

Idiot Moment of the Day

To begin this rather awesome moment of idiocy (and to defend myself just a bit), I must say that every time I get out of my car, I lock it. I never leave it unlocked, anywhere I go. Even if I'm just running into the store for five minutes, I lock my car. I don't have keyless entry, so I have to put the key in the driver's door and turn it, which locks all of the doors. The thing is, I can never remember which way locks the doors and which way unlocks the doors. I usually end up turning the key twice until I hear the locks engage.

Well, this morning I headed out to my car and went to unlock the doors so I could start the car and let it warm up while I scraped. My doors were all frosty from the night's cold, and my windows were completely frosted over. I stuck my key in the lock and turned until I heard the locks engage. But when I pulled the handle, the door wouldn't open. I was pretty sure it was frozen shut, so I pulled harder, but that didn't work.

The maintenance man at my apartment complex walked past as I was trying to get my door to open and asked me if it was frozen shut, and I said yes. He was very nice and tried to help me open it. I went around to the passenger's side door to see if that one would open so I could push the driver's side door open from the inside, but the other door was frozen shut too. The maintenance man grabbed a water bottle from his truck and tried melting the ice away with it, but the door still wouldn't open.

At this point, the maintenance man looked at me and said, "Are you sure it's unlocked?"

"Yeah, I know I unlocked it," I replied, but I pulled out my keys just to show him that it was already unlocked. Some of the water he had used had melted enough of the frost on the window so I could see the lock inside the car, and sure enough, the stupid car was locked.

I felt like the biggest idiot in the entire world. My doors weren't frozen shut. They were locked. I couldn't believe it, because that meant I didn't lock my car the night before, so when I turned the key, it locked it instead of unlocked it. I mumbled an inaudible thanks to the maintenance man and got into my car as quickly as I could. Thanks to my idiocy, I was fifteen minutes late to work.

Man, I am awesome. Except...not.

Just Not My Day

Do you ever have those days where it seems like everything that could go wrong does go wrong? Yeah . . . that was today. It pretty much sucked rocks.

So first of all, I woke up and looked outside, and it was snowing. Yuck. Plus, my car was not parked in covered parking, so I had to scrape my car. So I scraped my car and started my commute to work, and realized very quickly how crappy this commute was going to be. But I was good, I drove smart. I skidded a couple times, but I handled it, no big deal. I got all the way to my work's parking lot. The entrance is off of a pretty steep hill, and I tried my hardest to keep my car from going too fast, but it didn't work. Long story short, I ended up plowing over a curb into some bushes and totally bent the stop sign. Awesome. I was totally stuck. Some nice people pushed me out and helped me get my car into a parking spot. Turns out my tire was totally flat. Super awesome.

I left my car in the parking lot and headed into work, figuring I could find someone who would be able to help me change my tire. Work itself was fine, except for the fact that I was incredibly frazzled all day long. But I found someone to help me with my tire, and we got the spare on just fine.

So I left work and got in my car, ready to go to the tire place to replace my tire. But guess what? In the stress of losing the fight with the curb, I had left my lights on, and my battery was dead. Super! So I sat there for a minute, and I saw someone come out of one of the office buildings. I jumped out of my car and asked if he could jump my car. We tried a few times, and couldn't get my car to start. (I think he just didn't know what he was doing--I wanted to ask him to check the connections on his car, but he was a business man--you know the type, nice car, nice clothes, bluetooth headset--and was in a hurry.) The guy had a meeting he had to go to and couldn't stay to help. So my car was still dead. Goody. I sat in my car for another couple of minutes, doing my best not to have a complete break down, when I saw another man who looked much more helpful than the first: he was driving a work truck and was wearing work clothes. Definitely looked like he would know his way around a car. And sure enough, he got my car started. Hooray!

I was so excited to finally get out of the parking lot. But it didn't take me very long to realize that there was something slightly wrong--like the fact that in order to drive straight, I had to hold the steering wheel at a 45-degree angle. So the crash into the bushes messed with my alignment. But I called my dad, and he said that Discount Tire's website said that they fixed alignment, so I could go to one place for all my needs. Yeah, well, Discount Tire's website is a dirty liar. At least the Provo store doesn't do alignments. Crap. So I spent $82 on a new tire (woo hoo) and I have to skip my internship to go to Les Schwab tomorrow to spend another $50-60 on an alignment. I'm so excited.

And on top of it all, I have a cold.

I'm going to bed.
